As foreshadowed at the end of the second book, the third adventure sees Jacob Bell recruited by the Guise family to help Sir Anthony Babington rescue Mary Stuart from captivity. He discovers they are plotting to assassinate Queen Elizabeth and restore England to Catholicism. Working as a double agent with dangerous men such as Jed Sutton puts Jacob's family in danger. When Jacob exposes details of the plot to Walsingham, Mary Stuart is is brought to trial and sentenced to death. Realising Jacob is a spy, Jed Sutton kidnaps Jacob's wife Maria and son Rico, threatening to kill them unless Jacob helps him to release Mary Stuart from Fotheringay Castle. A seemingly impossible task and a dangerous gamble, lead to a desperate struggle as the affair reaches it's exciting climax.
